Look up product information for barcode values stored in Airtable. The miniExtensions Fetch Data from UPC Codes automation queries Barcode Lookup using your API key and writes available product details back to the record.
What you can do
- Look up existing product barcodes with Barcode Lookup.
- Save available names, descriptions, categories, and images.
- Enrich selected catalog records in bulk.
Map the product information
The barcode field supplies an existing identifier, such as a supported UPC or EAN. When Barcode Lookup finds a matching product, the automation can pull the following information into your selected Airtable fields:
- Product name: the product title returned by Barcode Lookup.
- Description: the available product description.
- Category: the product category returned by the provider.
- Product images: available product photos, saved as attachments in Airtable.
Select a product-name field, then choose which optional description, category, and image fields to fill. These four outputs are the product details supported by this automation; the information available for each code depends on the provider’s database.
A catalog can use these results to reduce manual research, while keeping its original codes and other internal product details. A matching record in the provider’s database is required, so not every valid barcode will return a complete set of information.
This looks up a code already stored in Airtable. Scanning a physical product, generating barcode images, and allocating official product identifiers are separate workflows. Check representative results before using the information in a customer-facing catalog.
A practical example
A team can maintain a table of existing product codes and use the automation to populate names, categories, and available images. Review the returned information before using it in a customer-facing catalog, especially when multiple product variants have similar packaging.
The provider’s images and descriptions are lookup results, not an independent verification of the product held by your team.
How to get started
Connect your Barcode Lookup key and select the barcode and output fields. Test known products before enriching the rest of the catalog.
Good to know
Product coverage depends on the provider. Preserve leading zeros in barcode values and review returned details.
